Results of Vote to

Revise the Definition of WPA Associate Member Category

Earlier this spring, the WPA Executive Council requested the WPA voting members decide the question of revising the definition of the Associate Member category of WPA membership.  Since the definitions of all WPA membership categories are contained in the WPA Constitution and Bylaws, a vote was required to change any of the definitions. Per the WPA Constitution and Bylaws, only Members and Associate Members are eligible to vote.

Results of that vote are as follows:

Accept             24

Reject               2

With the passage of the revision, the definition of the Associate Member category is widened to include individuals who have completed two years of graduate study in a mental health profession or related field; and the requirement for completion of one full year of professional work in psychology is dropped.

The following shows the WPA Associate member definition in the newly revised form.

Associate Members shall be persons who have received the Master’s Degree in, or have completed two years of graduate study in, psychology, a mental health profession, or a related field from a recognized and accredited graduate school.
